Info from the Little River Chamber - Most states require employers to give employees time off to vote.
Wow, I just read the most interesting article sent to me by Jennifer at the Little River Chamber of Commerce. Does your employer give you time off to vote? Interesting question; keep reading.................................
Does State Law Require You to Give Your Employees Paid Time Off to Vote?

by Glenn Shepard
March 6, 2012
The great thing about a democracy* is that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. But not everyone’s opinion counts.
The only way to make your opinion count is to exercise the greatest right we have in a democracy – the right to vote.
When someone who wants to “discuss” big issues like the ones above tells me they don’t vote, I tell them, “If your opinion isn’t important enough to you to vote on it, it isn’t important enough to me to listen to it”.
Freedom is not free.
It is paid for with the blood of the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces and made the ultimate sacrifice.
The least every citizen can and should do is honor that sacrifice by participating in the democracy they made possible for us.
Even though the general election isn’t for another eight months, now is a good time to plan for it with your employees.
Most states require employers to give employees time off to vote, though only 23 states require that it be paid time off. (Click here to see if yours does).
Regardless of whether or not yours does, I recommend that all employers give employees paid time off to vote in the general election in November (with the caveat that they bring back proof that they voted).
Not only is it the right thing to do, but voting teaches people to take action when they see a problem, instead of waiting and hoping someone else will solve it for them.

Little River Chamber - Libraries have lots to check out.
Here is some information that may interest you:

Libraries have lots for snowbirds to check out
By Steve Palisin
"The Strand’s winter vacationers who seek access to books, DVDs, community programs and computers to make them feel more at home for the season find them at area libraries.
“It is wonderful,” said Briget Livingston, director of the city of Myrtle Beach’s Chapin Memorial Library. She said besides the local population checking out the various programs available at Chapin Library, the increase in patronage from snowbirds extends the library’s reach and its value to the community. “We have started offering computer classes,” Livingston said, “and they are taking advantage of that – anything from the basics of using a mouse. People who have never used the computers are coming to learn.”
Georgetown County Library tallies its highest traffic from winter vacationers at its Waccamaw Neck branch in Pawleys Island and main branch in Georgetown, said Heather Pelham, public service librarian for the system. “Our programs get even more vibrant,” she said. “We have a lot of interested folks checking things out and lots of new faces.”
Pelham called this period from winter into spring “more exciting than ever” with the library system’s continuing events and “one-shot deals” such as the Mardi Gras night. Most programs are free, she said: “That’s the beauty of the libraries.”
The availability of computers and other resources for which people cannot afford magnifies their importance. “With the recession, our library use continues to climb,” Pelham said.
That also lets the public remain active in getting more high-tech, especially through patrons obtaining a password for free wi-fi usage in the branches, and use of computer desks that are “always chock full” of people.
Clifton Boyer, director of libraries for Horry County Memorial Library, based in Conway, said its Surfside Beach and North Myrtle Beach branches – both of which opened in expanded, larger quarters last year – entertain the highest counts of winter vacationers in the system.
Shelley Rideout, branch manager in North Myrtle Beach for almost three decades, said officials there see many “loyal snowbirds who come back year after year.” Besides moving into a bigger site, the library has a 24-unit computer lab and more room for programs, such as free legal seminars.
“They’ve found the new building,” she said. “They blink, look around and go ‘Wowwwwwww.’?”
Rideout said regulars hail from places such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Canada and even a few from Florida. The bitterly cold winter last year also prompted more vacationers to extend their stays, which spurred further usage of the library.
Retirees also have latched on to electronic books, Rideout said, “and they’re walking into the technical future, unafraid. They’re ready to do it.” Popular fiction never loses its lustre, Rideout said, and borrowing of DVD movies stays steady, offering prime pastimes for everyone, especially folks on holiday."

Not only does our area have access to books, Little River also boasts some of the best restaurants and shopping. We also offer fishing, boating and of course, golf. If you need information about current events, tourism, Chamber Memberships, or services in Little River, please be sure to visit www.littleriverchamber.org.

The Marvelous Wonderettes is a musical comedy with a book by Roger Bean. The show, which uses pop songs from the '50s and '60s as a vehicle to tell its story, pays homage to the high school Songleader squads of the 1950s. The World Has Changed. Will Your Chamber Lead or Follow?
Hello again from Little River. So many emails this week about things going on in our area. I want to tell you about them but first, enjoy this article by Frank Kenny”. What is your take?
*****************************************************
-This is an excerpt from a discussion on the blog of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives at www.acce.org/blog.
Chambers of Commerce, each representing hundreds to thousands of small, medium, and large businesses, are uniquely positioned to lead communities into the future.
Individuals can do little alone. Government is too slow and doesn’t usually come down on the side of the local job creators.
It is up to the organized business community to create a prosperous vision and then work across all groups to bring the vision into reality.
From my point of view, the average local business community (represented by a well meaning chamber) has virtually sat on the sidelines (busy doing grand opening, parades, and pageants) as the free-market world has deteriorated. It is almost as if they are afraid to take a stand for fear of being called out.
You don’t see the unions being afraid to take a punch and get a bloody nose when fighting for their lives. But the local business community, you can almost hear them saying, “don’t hit me”.
The old saying about change being the only constant is true. Change is upon us.
Chambers must question everything they “have always done” and take a brave and fresh look at the world as it is today. Thanks to social media, Chambers now have, through their members, immense reach and the ability effect change. Will they use it?
*****************************************************
For small businesses that are thinking about joining or staying in their chamber memberships now that things have changed, I say, “Join. Stay.” Forward thinking chambers are sitting in a very sweet spot, positioned at the center of a social media/communications triangle between the general community, the business community, and Government There are now media companies that can do amazing things for the members and community if they take advantage of their special place in the new scheme of things..
And now here are just a couple of current events coming up…
2011 Beach Boogie & BBQ Sept. 2-4 at Market Common
End of Summer Celebration Sept. 4 at Surfside Beach

Using Facebook to Promote an Event
Are you involved with an event?
Are you wanting to use Facebook to promote the event? Facebook Events is one of the most mis-used and misunderstood features. There are basically two ways to create an Event on Facebook: 1) via your personal Profile and 2) via your fan Page.

Learn from this simple Facebook case study.
First, create a Facebook Page for the event. Here is an example – Business In Blue Jeans.
This page went from none to 599 responses in just eight weeks.
The admin of the page knows that other Facebook pages that are tourism or animal related love to have user generated content (UGC) posted to their walls The page admins spend a few minutes each day updating and engaging with folks on related pages. Most pages want others to share their info if it pertains to their target market. Don’t post on somebody wall to self-promote. But promoting a fun event that their target market might find fun and interesting, you bet.
All comments, no matter where posted, are answered. Lots of photos are posted. So long as you consistently provide enough valuable content on your fan Page wall, you can certainly periodically promote the direct link to your event.
Videos are created by the committee and posted as UGC or by the admin.
The net results? A very active page that grew by leaps and bounds.
Cost? Just the time, energy and love of committed committee people.
The event was also posted to the Little River Chamber's site, www.littleriverchamber.org/pages/BusinessInBlueJeans.

Quick Tips on Social Media Marketing for Tourist Businesses
By Frank J. Kenny
July 29, 2011
Let me share a quick story with you. I traveled the country for 7 months this past year giving presentations and doing research for my book. I traveled in my RV. How did I find my next campground or RV resort? Not once did I use the 2 inch thick book I purchased. Instead, I Googled “Clovis RV resorts”, for example.
I didn’t go to the websites of the RV resorts that came up in the results. Instead, I checked out the ratings and comments. If the rating and comments were positive, I then went to the business’ site to check fees and availability. This is so important for small businesses to realize. I trusted strangers opinions first.
If the comments were strongly negative I moved on to the next listing. Even just slightly negative comments influenced where I would stay and spend my money.
First, understand that you don’t have full control of your marketing. Your customers, and even strangers, are having a bigger and bigger impact. This is important for you to accept because the old way of advertising and marketing are going away.
Check out these statistic on travelers:
•87% said reviews impacted hotel choice
•84% said reviews impacted method of travel
•78% said reviews impacted choice of dining
Source http://www.stikkymedia.com/articles/social-media-and-the-tourism-industry-statistics
If you add up all the facts:
* People trust the opinions of others more than they trust your marketing.
* People can easily see comments and ratings today through an Internet search.
* People are followers by nature.
* No matter how good you truly are, your prospects are going to defer to others when making purchase decisions. It is not fair but that is life.

Now, having said that, what should you do about it?
* Make sure your business is listed correctly in the rating directories like Google and Yelp.
* Encourage your happy customers to post positive comments and give you high ratings. Use signage. Ask.
* Encourage your customers to check-in on Facebook Places and Foursquare. Those are endorsements.
* Make sure that you are listening for your business’ name out on the web. Reshare the positive comments and answer the negative ones professionally. Turn the bad ones around by being proactive.
Take your first action right now by using Google Alerts. It’s free.
*******************************************************
So, bottom line: You don’t have full control of your marketing and the old way of advertising and marketing are going away.
Thank you Jennifer again for the email. I can't wait for the next one.

The Fleetwood Mac Work Ethic
by Glenn Shepard
August 2, 2011
Those who succeed at anything understand that success requires giving your best - even when working with people you don't like.

By 1976, the personal lives of the members of Fleetwood Mac were like a living Jerry Springer episode.
Keyboardist Christine McVie was divorcing bass player John McVie. Drummer Mick Fleetwood was divorcing his wife. And singer Stevie Nicks was going through a bitter separation from guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.
The band had just broken through the year before with hit songs "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me".
The record company told them they were on the brink of mega stardom, but they had to strike while the iron was hot.
That meant immediately recording a follow-up album, even though they couldn't stand to be in a room together.
One night while working on songs for the new album, Lindsay Buckingham wrote "You Can Go Your Own Way".
The opening line goes:
Loving you isn't the right thing to do.
Packing up, shacking up's all you want to do.
It was a direct shot at Stevie, and she insisted that those lyrics be taken out of the song.
He refused, and the band somehow managed to pull together long enough to record the album Rumours.
Stevie later reported that every night when she sang those lyrics on stage, she wanted to kill Lindsey. But it was that passion that helped make the song and the album so great.
Because of their abilitity to give their best, even when working with people they couldn't stand,
Rumours stayed at #1 on the Billboard charts for six months, sold 30 million copies, and launched their careers into the stratosphere.
It came as no surprise that when Stevie Nicks announced on America's Got Talent last week that she's launching a new tour, 35 years after Rumours, shows started selling out immediately.
Be a professional at whatever you do, and you'll reap the benefits for a lifetime.
What do you think? Will you be able to give your best even when working with people you don't particularly like?
Thanks again to Jennifer at the Chamber and thank you for the Little River Chamber's website which is so full of information that you need not look anywhere else for relocation information, Restaurants, Entertainment, golf, and local current events. The collection of works titled Artfull Images consists of 20 photographs, many interpreting nature, particularly of the Brunswick Coast. An opening reception is being held at the gallery on July 9 from 2 to 5 p.m.
The North Carolina photographer says, “I was hooked on photography as a little girl sitting on my father's knee in front of his enlarger. Sitting in the dark seeing the image shine on the easel, dropping the paper into smelly chemicals and watching the photograph appear was sheer magic to me. Accompanying him on photo shoots from Appalachian mountaintop peaks to gleaming white beaches up and down the east coast are the wonderful memories of my very special childhood.”
Early in her career, Gray worked in the news industry. She spent 16 years with the New York Times-owned Star-News in Wilmington, N.C. Describing her experiences, she said, “I photographed wildfires, drownings and all manner of violence. Working in the news industry you learn to think fast, grabbing shots as they come at you. You learn to work in a myriad of circumstances when you're dealing with news issues, most you can't plan for. Photographing people dealing with life's toughest moments or life's greatest joys was always a learning experience – emotionally and artistically."
Throughout her career, the versatile shutterbug has also worked in architectural, food and fashion photography for various publications, including Wooden Boat magazine and Tasteful magazine in Wilmington, N.C.
Gray, who grew up in Marion, N.C., cites her father, an amateur photographer, as one of her major influences, along with the late Joe Nesbitt, who served as photo chief at the Star-News from 1958 to 1982.
In a telephone interview, Gray said, “Probably my favorite piece in this show is the school of minnows. My husband had taken our granddaughters out fishing and while I sat on the dock waiting for them to return, all these little minnows were just darting around like crazy.”

Wells adds, “Moving to the coast of Brunswick County in North Carolina in 2007 brought me back to enjoying the art of photography. Watching the tide come and go on the oyster beds or an incredible tie-dyed sunset over Shallotte Point are inspiration to me. The sights, sounds and smells of this special place has sparked a new interest in my work. My father taught me what to look for all those years ago and I've never stopped looking since.... “
Gallery owner and style consultant Ginny Lassiter said, “I was intrigued by Gray’s images as soon as I saw them and knew I wanted to build a show around her. Gray has a true photographer’s eye. She looks at the same objects we all do, yet she sees something completely different.”

Why Women In Management Are No Laughing Matter
Just read an awesome blog that was sent to me by Jennifer at the Little River Chamber of Commerce, promoter of local economic development, and I must re-post:
Why Women In Management Are No Laughing Matter
by Glenn Shepard
June 28, 2011
I believe women have many God given advantages in management. For example, they’re generally more patient than men, more inclined to use tact than brute force in their management style, and better at juggling multiple priorities. (I tell my employees to never tell me more than two things at once, because I’ll forget the third).
I used to teach a management seminar for women, but we quit offering it because men got so riled up about it. A lawyer in Kentucky threatened to sue when we held the seminar at Bluegrass Community & Technical College in Lexington because he thought it was discriminatory against men (although a man did attend when we held it at Daytona Beach Community College the next week), and a gas station owner in Jacksonville threatened to cut off a certain part of my anatomy when we held the seminar at the University of North Florida.
I was reminded last week of how many double standards still exist for women when the Executive Director of a chamber of commerce in Indiana called me to discuss a conversation she just had with a board member. He was concerned that she laughed too much, even though she’s been incredibly effective and has been recognized for her accomplishments.
I can’t count how many times a woman in my management seminars has told me about a male supervisor walking by her desk and stopping to ask “What’s wrong?” When she responds, “Nothing,” he asks “Then why aren’t you smiling?” It’s as if people expect women to smile all the time. But if a man smiles all the time, people think he’s up to something.
It’s a well-known fact that girls are taught to be people pleasers (i.e. the 19th century nursery rhyme “What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice”) and boys are taught be tough, aggressive, and to never show weakness.
Family psychologist Dr. Robin Alter tells of an experiment where 4th graders were secretly videotaped while on the playground. The girls were more likely to make concessions just to be together. What they did didn’t matter as much as whom they did it with. The boys were more interested in each other's toys and accomplishments. What they did mattered more than whom they did it with.
We see this in adulthood where women are more relationship oriented and men are more task oriented.
A woman who attended my seminar at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan summed it up best when she said, “Women have to be twice as good at what they do to be considered half as good as a man”.
Because women in authority positions are scrutinized more than men in the same positions, they have to always be aware of who’s watching. Women may have achieved equal opportunity in the workplace, but the challenges they face are far from equal to those of men.

Build a Dream Brick Fundraiser
I am always looking for fun and constructive things to do here in our area and one place I check regularly is the Little River Chamber of Commerce’s Events page. This product of my most recent visit to www.littleriverchamber.org/ touched my heart The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach, despite many improvements and additions since 1985 has outgrown the current building. Plans are underway to move to a new location where a larger and more modern facility will need to be built. Funds are desperately needed for the construction of this new animal shelter. Their build a Dream Brick Fundraiser is a wonderful way to donate towards this new facility where thousands of animals' lives will be saved!
By purchasing a brick, which will be displayed at the new facility, you will be offering a permanent gift of love. Bricks can be purchased as memorial gifts, tributes to your pets or even as gifts to yourself. This everlasting gift represents your caring for all animals present, past and future. Forms for donation can be found on our website or at the shelter. www.humanesocietynmb.org/ or stop in at 409 Bay St., North Myrtle Beach, SC
If you would like to order a brick you can download the form and mail it in with a check or drop it off at the shelter.
The organization is thankful for any support and donations they have received from the public.

Every year in mid-May, locals and visitors are drawn to the waterfront in Little River to enjoy a carefree day surrounded by the people, music, food, and arts and crafts of the annual Blue Crab Festival.

There's always the beautiful 114 acre tract of woodlands and salt marshes of the historic Vereen Memorial Gardens. You can also golf in Little River at one of the Little River courses, or take a charter fishing trip with one of the local fishermen, or just fish off the docks at the waterfront.

For a taste of local flavor that doesn't come from the sea, La Belle Amie regularly hosts wine tastings, vineyard tours, and concerts with live local bands all year long.
The Little River Chamber and area businesses are also trying to attract visitors by holding the annual The Shrimp and Jazz Festival and The Little River Open Golf Tournament.
Each year the Saturday after Thanksgiving the Intracoastal Waterway Boat Parade starts in Little River and ends at Vereen 's Marina in North Myrtle beach. People fill the waterway businesses and homes to see the holiday decorations on various boats and to donate toys for needy children.
